Green living home > Your garden > Watering lawns Watering Lawns Most homeowners and renters alike love the look and feel of a lush, greenlawn. Depending on where you live, this may be easy, or it may be difficult. Some climes make a green lawn easy, while others will require you to do a lot of extra work to keep it looking great. Along with planting the right seed and fertilizing, you have to worry about watering lawns properly. If you don’t do it correctly, you can end up with problems. When it comes to watering lawns, there is one time of day you should do it. If you go about watering lawns in the middle of the day, you are going to end up with brown, dead grass. When water hits the grass midday, and the sun beats down, the grass becomes fried. The hot sun causes the water to evaporate from the blades, and the damage can be severe. Instead, water your lawns at sunset, or even better, in the middle of the night. Watering lawns in the middle of the night is not the best option unless you have a sprinkler system. These can be set to work at any time of the day, and work well to get your whole lawn the perfect amount of water. The water then has time to sink down into the roots of the grass, and will not be stuck to the blades during midday. If a sprinkler system is not an option for you when watering lawns, you should do it by hand at or near sunset. Simply use a hose and spray the entire lawn. Another important aspect of watering lawns is knowing when enough is enough. If you are having a dry spell, your lawn will start to look bad, and you will know that it needs help. On the other hand, if you are getting plenty of rain, it’s not a good idea to keep watering the lawn. If too much water sits around the roots, it can cause root rot, and your lawn will die anyway. If you aren’t sure, look for signs of cracked earth and browning leaves. When you see this, it’s time to start watering lawns and flowers. Time may be an issue for you, and watering lawns is a great chore to pass on to your children. Allow them to do it one night a week, and have a neighbor ready to help out if you go on vacation. You may find that watering lawns is a peaceful endeavor, and may be something you find yourself looking forward to at the end of the day. Other resources
